Cars and trucks were backed up for miles on Interstate 80 in West Des Moines Wednesday night as police responded to reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
West Des Moines police responded to a five-car accident on the I-80 westbound lanes at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, according to Sgt. Jason Heintz of the West Des Moines Police Department. Heintz said the crash involved two semi-trucks and three passenger vehicles and resulted only in minor injuries.
The crash blocked the westbound lanes, requiring drivers to take a detour by exiting Jordan Creek Pkwy and returning to the highway at Grand Prairie Pkwy in West Des Moines, according to Heintz.
“Tow trucks had to remove all 5 vehicles due to them all being disabled,” Heintz wrote in a message to the Register.
One westbound lane was still closed as of Wednesday at 7 p.m. but is set to open no later than 7:30 p.m., Heintz said.
West Des Moines police and the Iowa State Patrol are investigating the cause of the crash.
This is a developing story.
