MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) – UPDATE: An 18-year-old woman from Mankato has been charged in the traffic incident leading to the death of Jeffrey Allie Ward, 66 of Mankato Monday night.
Minnesota State Patrol lists Kaylee Lynette Richmond, 18, of Mankato as the driver of the Nissan Altima which struck Ward around 9:30 p.m. Monday while driving eastbound on Madison Avenue in Mankato.
Richmond is charged with felony Criminal Vehicular Homicide – Operate Motor Vehicle in Grossly Negligent Manner in Blue Earth County.
According to a criminal complaint, Richmond told responding law enforcement that she had been racing another vehicle on Madison Ave.
The section of the road where the incident occurred is a 35 MPH speed-limit zone. Investigators reconstructing the scene estimate Richmond was driving at speeds between 70 and 75 MPH when her vehicle struck Ward.
Court documents show witnesses describing another vehicle leaving the scene as Richmond stopped her vehicle.
Mankato Public Safety responded to the fatal crash on Madison Avenue and Hope Street last night, around 9:30 p.m. Richmond was booked into Blue Earth County jail at 1:13 a.m. Tuesday.
She remains in custody pending a court appearance, which has not been set at the time of this update.
Richmond wasn’t wearing a seat belt and alcohol is not believed to have been involved according to a State Patrol report.
If convicted, she could face up to 10 years a $20,000 fine, or both.
Authorities add that the investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE: An update to a fatal crash in Mankato Monday Night on Madison Avenue.
Minnesota State Patrol says a 66-year-old pedestrian was killed in the incident. That crash happened around 9:30 p.m. near Hope Street.
The incident report shows a Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on Madison Avenue when it struck the 66-year-oldan at Hope Street.
A portion of the street was closed to traffic while officers reconstructed the scene.
Mankato Police say State Patrol has taken control of the investigation due to the crash being fatal.
ORIGINAL STORY: Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a fatal crash in the Hilltop area of Mankato last night.
Mankato Public Safety responded to a serious crash on Madison Avenue near Hope Street.
That crash happened around 9:30 p.m.
A portion of Madison Avenue was closed to traffic while officers reconstructed the scene.
Mankato Police say the Minnesota State Patrol has taken control over the investigation of this crash because it is fatal.
Authorities say they will release more information today about what happened and possible charges.
