GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – One person is dead after a fatal car crash Sunday afternoon.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol says Kyrell Harper was trying to escape a traffic stop when he hit an SUV at the intersection of Stantonsburg Road and B’S Barbecue Road with the vehicle he was driving.
Harper’s vehicle then lost control, went off the road, hit a road sign, tree, and caught fire, according to officials.
The Highway Patrol says 22-year-old Harper was caught going 101 mph in a 70 mph zone while traveling east on I-587 near the Mozingo Road exit just at 1:54 p.m.
The Highway Patrol says they were able to free Harper, but the Goldsboro man in the passenger seat, Bryson Devonte, 20, was killed.
Officials say the driver of the SUV was not injured, but the car suffered minor damage.
Harper, who’s from Goldsboro, is charged with multiple charges including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and felony flee to elude. He was jailed on a $100,000 bond.
