Two Saskatchewan residents were killed Sunday in a head-on crash in Cypress County, after swerving to avoid a moose and slamming into a cattle hauler.

In a news release, Redcliff RCMP said officers responded to the two-vehicle collision on Highway 41 between Highway 545 and Township Road 190 at approximately 7:25 p.m.

“Investigation revealed that an SUV swerved to avoid a moose, at which time it struck a cattle hauler head on,” the release stated, adding the SUV caught fire as a result of the collision.

RCMP said the two occupants were residents of the town of Leader, Sask. — a small town located off of Highway 21 between Kindersley and Maple Creek.

“Condolences to the family and friends of both deceased,” the release stated.

According to Redcliff RCMP, no further updates are anticipated. A media relations officer with Alberta RCMP said the detachment would not be releasing personal details or confirming if the two passengers were related.
