MERCER — A Mercer County school district is mourning the loss of three young people in a one-vehicle crash in Lake Township on Thursday night.
An 18-year-old man and two 17-year-old girls died in the crash, which happened at about 8:55 p.m. Thursday in the 900 block of Skunk Run Road, northeast of Mercer, according to the Pennsylvania State Police in Mercer.
According to state police, the agency received an automatic crash notification from an Apple iPhone that pinged at an address in the 900 block of Skunk Run Road. Emergency responders arrived at the location to find a 2011 Chevrolet Impala fully engulfed in fire, troopers reported Friday.
State police determined that the car was traveling north on Skunk Run Road when the driver lost control while negotiating a curve and left the roadway. The car struck some trees, causing it to spin and catch fire, troopers reported.
Officials with the Lakeview School District in Stoneboro posted information about the incident on the district’s Facebook page Friday morning.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that I announce the passing of three members of our small, loving, and close-knit school community. These bright and promising students left us too soon, leaving our community in deep sorrow,” the statement read.
There was no school in the district on Friday, but the middle-high school was open for students who wanted to gather to support each other, and grief counseling and support services were made available to students, according to the statement.
