The Lee’s Summit School District has confirmed that one of its teachers died Thursday morning in a crash along U.S. 50 Highway and 7 Highway.
The school district sent out a letter to families and staff identifying the teacher as Lee’s Summit High School’s Rachel Stone of Bates City, Missouri.
Stone, 47, had served as an educator in the district for over two decades.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the deadly crash in southeast Jackson County. Troopers are still working to determine the cause of the crash, which involved a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer and Stone’s 2021 Chevy Malibu.
Around 6:45 a.m. Thursday morning, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office called the highway patrol to assist with multiple crashes near the incident.
An MSHP crash report says the truck driver lost control on the icy highway, crossing the median and into oncoming traffic. The crash was a head-on collision.
Stone was pronounced dead at the scene. No physical injuries to the truck driver have been reported.
Stone student taught with the school district in 1997 before becoming a full-time physical education and health teacher. She also served as the girl’s assistant volleyball coach.
Her husband, Scott Stone, is a Bernard Campbell Middle School teacher. Stone is also survived by her two children. The family is asking for privacy and does not want to be contacted at this time.
“To our Lee’s Summit High School Community:
It is with a heavy heart that I share devastating news with our students and families.
Mrs. Rachel Stone, a physical education and health teacher who was a valued part of our Tiger family, died this morning following a car accident on Highway 50.
Mrs. Stone was a dedicated educator who will be missed throughout the LSR7 community.
Mrs. Stone student-taught in LSR7 in 1997 and then began her career in the LSHS community in 2000. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Stone served as the girl’s assistant volleyball coach. Her husband, Scott, is a teacher at Bernard Campbell Middle School. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to Mr. Stone, their two children and extended family.
Our school community is built on caring relationships, and we recognize that situations like this can be hard for students to comprehend or process. Additional counselors and district leaders are on campus today to support students and staff as we grieve this news, and our counseling team will continue to respond to the emotional needs of the students and staff this week.
This is truly a sad day for LSHS, and for our education community. Please join us in keeping the Stone family in your thoughts as we work to support each other in the coming days.”
