The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says authorities responded to Barth Drive around 2:40 a.m. after a vehicle crashed into the home.
A 32-year-old woman driving a 2010 Subaru reportedly lost control of her vehicle while driving north on Mayfair Road and crashed into the residence after going off the roadway.
“My boyfriend heard a squealing of the tires and the crush of the fence,” recalled neighbor Kendra Ek. “I was asleep on the couch, I woke up to what sounded like a sledgehammer going straight through bricks.”
A 69-year-old man, who was sleeping inside the home, was struck and killed by the vehicle. He has since been identified as Robert D. Shull Jr., according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“He (Schull) was a very sweet man,” Ek said of her neighbor. “He’d check up on his neighbors, he was one of the nicest guys you could meet. You’d walk down to the mailbox, and he was with you, he’s sitting there waving to you, he’s talking to you all the way down. It’s a cold day out, he’s double checking that you’ve got your gloves on when you’re walking around, that you’ve got your coat, you’ve got your hat, and if you don’t he’s like, ‘you better go get it!’ He was one of probably the nicest guys in this area.”
The driver, who may face charges depending on the outcome of the investigation, was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital by Green Fire.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Summit Metro Crash Response Team responded to the scene where Mayfair Road was closed for nearly four hours after the crash.
Officials say that speed, alcohol, and narcotics are believed to be factors in the crash.
“It’s just a sad situation. Very sad,” added neighbor Theresa Dies.
Hallie Maczko the driver of the vehicle was charged and arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
On Friday, Feb. 24, Maczko was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
