A "serious" crash in the Leicester Royal Infirmary's A&E car park has closed the A594 Welford Road and Aylestone Road this morning (Thursday, April 27).
Emergency services are at the scene and Leicestershire Police says the incident is causing "significant disruption to traffic". The public is being urged to avoid the area.
Police first issued a brief statement about the incident on Twitter at 3:30am. Any commuters planning on travelling in the area should be aware of the closures and plan alternative routes.
Leicestershire Police confirmed the closure on social media earlier this morning. The tweet reads: "0330hrs l Welford Rd / Aylestone Rd – LEICESTER Due to a serious RTC there are currently road closures in place around the Leicester Royal Infirmary A&E car park.

"This is likely to cause significant disruption to traffic. Please avoid the area."
A later tweet, at 5.40am, read: "Please note that there is significant disruption in this area due to an RTC emergency services are at the scene. Please avoid the area if possible and expect some delays."
At 7.22am, roads and traffic monitoring service Inrix reported: "A594 Infirmary Road in both directions closed, heavy traffic due to serious accident between Knighton Street and Grange Lane. Outside of Leicester Royal Infirmary."

Exact details about the collision remain unknown at this stage, but a motorbike has been seen being taken away by recovery teams.

Heavy congestion is being reported at Southgates underpass, Newarke Street, Regent Road, Jarrom Street, Walnut Street and Aylestone Road.
Traffic is congested in the city centre this morning as road closures remain in place.
Officers remain at the scene while the aftermath is being dealt with.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We are aware of this incident and are speaking to the officers involved. We will be looking to issue further information as soon as we can."

A member of the control room staff told us: "We received a call from the police at 2.45am to assist with a collision involving one motorcycle.
"Police and ambulance were in attendance. We made the motorcycle safe and left the incident with the police."
Fire and rescue crews left the scene at 3.15am.
