Scooter, pickup collision leaves Park Hills man dead – Daily Journal Online

A collision between a scooter and a pickup truck resulted in a fatal accident around 10 a.m. Sunday in Park Hills.
According to the Park Hills Police Department, John Umfleet, 58, of Park Hills, was traveling on East Main Street when the scooter he was driving struck the side of a pickup truck driven by a 35-year-old Leadwood man. After being ejected from the scooter, Umfleet reportedly went under the truck, receiving fatal injuries.
St. Francois County Coroner Jason Coplin responded to the scene of the accident, where he pronounced Umfleet dead.
Additionally, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that troopers responded to five area injury accidents in recent days.
The first, an early morning accident that occurred Saturday on Route OO in St. Francois County, resulted in a Farmington man receiving serious injuries.
According to the patrol, a 1994 Honda Civic driven by Riley J. Whitehead, 21, of Farmington, was traveling southbound on Route OO, north of Smith Road, when the vehicle slid off the left road edge, struck an embankment, went airborne, and collided with a tree. The impact of the collision ejected him through the windshield. Whitehead, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt when the accident took place, was transported by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital St. Louis, where he was treated for serious injuries.
The car, listed as totaled, was towed from the scene by Boyd Towing.
The second accident involved an Irondale resident who received minor injuries in a Saturday morning accident that reportedly occurred when the driver attempted to avoid a deer on the road at the intersection of Route U and Hopewell Road in Washington County.
According to the patrol, the 7:38 a.m. accident took place when a southbound 2013 Chevrolet Spark driven by Hope Cantrell, 23, of Irondale, attempted to avoid hitting a deer in the roadway at the intersection of Route U and Hopewell Road. In doing so, she lost control of her vehicle, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle came to rest on the right side of the roadway, against the tree, facing south.
Cantrell, who was reportedly wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Washington County Hospital by Washington County Ambulance. Her car received minor damage and was driven from the scene.
The third accident involved two Bonne Terre residents who received moderate injuries in a Monday morning one-vehicle accident that occurred east of Bonne Terre in St. Francois County.
According to the patrol, the 9:40 a.m. accident took place when a 2012 Ford Flex driven by Sarah K. Brouhard, 33, of Bonne Terre, was traveling eastbound on Highway Y, east of Critter Lane. The Flex reportedly traveled off the right side of the road and struck a tree.
The driver and her passenger, a 13-year-old female, also from Bonne Terre, received moderate injuries and were transported by St. Francois County Ambulance to Mercy Hospital Jefferson, where both were treated for moderate injuries. Both the driver and passenger were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
The patrol reports that the SUV received moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Buckley Towing.
The fourth accident resulted in three St. Francois County residents receiving moderate injuries Wednesday in a late-morning accident that occurred on southbound I-55 in Jefferson County.
According to the patrol, the accident took place when a southbound 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Sonja Camden, 63, of Farmington, was disabled and stationary in lane two of the internet, south of the 187.2-mile marker, after having been involved in a previous crash at the same location.
A 2019 Ford Fusion, driven by Levi A. Reynolds, 28, of Farmington, was also traveling southbound on I-55 and failed to observe that the Jeep was stopped in the roadway. Reynolds swerved to the left just prior to impact in an attempt to avoid the collision, but the front right of the Ford impacted the left rear of the Jeep.
Following the impact, the Jeep began sliding and was pushed partially into the third lane. The Jeep came to rest on the dashed lane line separating lanes two and three, facing southwest. The Ford came to rest in the second lane, facing south.
Camden and Melba D. Dischbein, 88, of Desloge, who was a passenger in his vehicle, received moderate injuries, as did Reynolds. All three, who were reportedly wearing seat belts when the accident occurred, were transported by Rock Township Ambulance District to Mercy Hospital South.
Both vehicles were listed as totaled and towed from the scene by Leo’s Towing.
The fifth and final accident reported as of press time Wednesday took place at 7:46 a.m. Wednesday and involved a two-car collision at Route BB and Irondale Road in St. Francois County that resulted in both vehicles being totaled. According to the patrol, an eastbound 2017 Ford Escape, driven by Keila Degonia, 32, of Bismarck, failed to yield at the intersection and struck the left side of a northbound 2016 Chrysler 300, driven by Andrew B. Mason, 18, of Farmington.
Mason and his passenger, a 15-year-old male juvenile of Farmington, who were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, were taken by private conveyance to Mercy Jefferson Hospital in Festus, where they were treated for minor injuries. Degonia, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Parkland Health Center in Farmington by St. Francois County Ambulance.
Both vehicles were listed as totaled and were towed from the scene by Marler’s Towing.
