PULLMAN, Wash. — Pullman police are warning residents of an elaborate phone scam circulating the community that is leading victims to believe family members may be involved in a car crash.
On Oct. 23, an elderly man received a call from a scammer who told him that his grandson had been involved in a traffic collision.
The scammers created a narrative for the crash and requested payment for legal counsel to defend his grandson against criminal charges.
The victim was told to put a cash into an envelope and place it into a box. This box was later picked up by a woman, who was described as having bright red hair and drove a gray four-door Kia.
Pullman police are wanting to remind the public to never provide personal or financial information to someone you don’t know. If you receive an unexpected call from someone requesting money, proceed with caution.
If you have any information about this scam, or may know whose involved, please contact Officer Abby St. Andre at (509) 334-0802.
