TRENDING:
A Reading woman was killed in a Monroe County crash when the driver of the vehicle she was in crashed in a wooded area while attempting to avoid state police, officials said.
Lidia Burgos, 33, died Thursday in the crash in Tobyhanna, according to the Monroe County coroner’s office.
Burgos was the front- seat passenger in a vehicle that troopers stopped in Stroud Township for traffic and equipment violations and because they suspected the driver of DUI, state police said.
Troopers gave this account in a press release:
The driver had an active arrest warrant and refused to get out of the vehicle when he was told to do so. He became combative with the troopers.
The driver placed the vehicle in drive and drove from the scene. Troopers pursued the vehicle for about 19 miles before it crashed into a wooded area in Tobyhanna.
The driver and a second passenger were removed from the vehicle and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash. Troopers did not say at what time the crash occurred.
Burgos was dead when she was removed from the vehicle.
State police did not release the names of the driver or the second passenger. Information on their medical conditions could not be obtained.
An autopsy was performed Friday on Burgos, but results were pending, the coroner’s office said.
Troopers said the investigation continues.
