PITTSFIELD — Louis Marcel, 81, whose SUV flipped after being hit on Valentine Drive on Sept. 10, has died of his injuries.
Marcel was driving north on Valentine Drive about 1:20 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound vehicle driven by Alex Kight, 26, who failed to stop at a stop sign on Lakeway Drive, police said.
Marcel’s vehicle spun, struck a tree and then flipped onto its side; he had to be extricated through the windshield.
His daughter told The Eagle that Marcel suffered multiple broken bones, and that he had to be intubated. He died on Wednesday.
The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office has requested a full autopsy, and the Pittsfield Police Department is reviewing the crash report.
Kight was cited for failing to stop for a stop sign.
Julia Sabourin, director of community engagement and communication for the DA’s Office, said once the autopsy and the review of the accident have been completed, a determination will be made as to whether to pursue a charge of negligent operation resulting in motor vehicle homicide.
Marcel was a retired Pittsfield police officer who lived in Fort Pierce, Fla. He previously served in the U.S. Army Air Force.
