New Orleans family seeking answers after man dies from crash with OPSO deputy
The family of Ernest Jarreau, 30, is seeking answers after he died from injuries after being involved in a car accident with an Orleans Parish Sheriff Office deputy on Dec. 1.
Katrina Jarreau says her son was driving on Interstate 10 between Canal and Orleans around 2 a.m., when he was involved in an accident with an OPSO deputy. She says she arrived at the hospital to find her son unconscious, suffering from a severe head injury, internal bleeding, a cracked skull and spine injuries. Ernest later died from his injuries.
The family claims they have yet to be contacted by law enforcement regarding the accident, even when they arrived at the hospital.
Jarreau says they submitted a public records request for the police report because it was never provided — which is how they uncovered the other driver involved and learned that Ernest was ejected from the car.
OPSO confirmed reserve Deputy Raheem Kadeem was involved in the crash. He was off duty at the time and remained on the scene.
The investigation is now being handled by the New Orleans Police Department.
The family says they have concerns about what actually transpired the night of the crash and says there is only one account, the deputy’s.
WDSU reached out for a status on the investigation and whether a toxicology report was completed on the scene; at this time, there are no updates.
The family shared Jarreau’s heart and left kidney were donated to two other people.
