A Glen Ridge teenager was killed and three others were injured in single-vehicle crash late Sunday night in a park in neighboring Bloomfield, authorities said Monday.
The 16-year-old boy died from injuries resulting from an 11:30 p.m. crash on West Circuit Drive, the loop road in Essex County Brookdale Park, the county prosecutor, Theodore N. Stephens II, said in an announcement.
The boy was pronounced dead a short time later at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, the announcement stated.
The three other occupants were taken to local hospitals, where authorities said they remained in stable condition Monday. Their names were not released.
The crash remained under investigation Monday, when authorities said they were looking into whether excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
The boy who died, as well as the 17-year-old driver of the SUV involved in the crash and the two other passengers, were all students at Glen Ridge High School, authorities said.
The vehicle involved in a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy from Glen Ridge went off the road at a bend at the bottom of a zig-zagging descent on West Circuit Drive in Essex County Brookdale Park late on the night of Jan. 15. The crash occurred at Brookdale Park’s southern end, at a left-hand bend in West Circuit Drive, the one-way road that runs counterclockwise around the park. The bend is at the bottom of a mildly zig-zagging descent.
At the left-hand bend, just off the right side of the road, a line of discolored grass ran from the concrete base of a toppled lamp post, over a walking path and into to a tree that was blackened and stripped of bark in places on its lower truck. A green metal balance bar that’s part of an exercise station was bent in the direction of the tree. Shards of broken plastic littered the area.Investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at the scene Tuesday declined to comment.
Glen Ridge schools were closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and high school and district officials did not immediately respond to phone and email messages left Monday afternoon.
