A fatal crash closed East Pleasant Valley Road at Laguna Road on the Oxnard Plain for hours late Tuesday afternoon.
A 47-year-old Oxnard woman was killed and her passenger suffered major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. A third party declined medical treatment for minor injuries.
The two-vehicle accident was reported around 4:20 p.m. as the Oxnard woman, who was driving a 2019 Nissan Sentra sedan, tried to make a left turn from Laguna onto Pleasant Valley, CHP officials said. The Nissan collided with a 2008 Jeep SUV headed northbound on Pleasant Valley. An Oxnard man, 32, was driving the Jeep.
Both vehicles ended up in a drainage ditch. The Oxnard woman was trapped in the sedan and died at the scene after being extricated by firefighters. Her name was not released pending notification of relatives.
Her passenger, a 39-year-old Oxnard man, was also trapped and required extrication, said Officer Jorge Alfaro. The man suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. No update on his condition was available Wednesday.
The driver of the Jeep had only minor injuries, CHP officials said. The agency determined he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Firefighters from Oxnard and Ventura County responded to the incident. The crash investigation and cleanup closed both lanes of Pleasant Valley for about four hours. Lanes had reopened by 7:50 p.m.
Witnesses are asked to call the CHP’s Ventura-area office during business hours to talk with a crash investigator at 805-662-2640.
