A 15-year-old was severely hurt Monday when the stolen car hit a school bus
Cellphone video shows kids hanging out of a stolen white KIA, then, at full force, slamming into a parked school bus, sending it flying into the air.
The 15-year-old passenger hit the bus, losing consciousness Monday morning.
On Wednesday, the teen’s family spoke publicly for the first time to WISN 12 News.
“Right now, he’s on a breathing machine. It’s definitely a miracle,” Trinika Walker said.
Walker said the family is not identifying the 15-year-old at this time, but couldn’t believe the video when she saw it.
“My first thought is, ‘What is going on?’ Meaning, ‘What are they thinking?'” Walker said.
It’s the exact behavior Walker said she’s been trying to stop.
Ever since her 17-year-old son was shot and killed in Milwaukee in 2018, she’s been working in Milwaukee schools and holding summer programs with her group “Stop the Violence” to show kids they don’t have to break the law.
And when she realized a family member was involved in Monday’s crash, she was devastated.
“It hurted my heart more so because I missed it,” Walker said.
An 11-year-old boy getting off the school bus was thrown during impact. That sixth grader had a leg injury and is at home recovering.
Several others in the stolen car ran from the crash, leaving their friend for dead.
Police are still looking for the driver. Walker hopes they’re caught soon.
“We don’t want what happened the other day to happen again,” Walker said.
