HINTON — A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 75 through Hinton caused a multi-vehicle crash Saturday, Sept. 9, and a fatality.
According to information from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, the Plymouth County 911 dispatch took a call of a traffic accident which occurred at the intersection of Highway 75 and County Road C-60 in Hinton.
Witnesses reported a Gold Nissan Sentra driven by an unknown Caucasian male was traveling at a high rate of speed through Hinton.
This Sentra side swiped a Blue SUV driven by Baylie Andersen of Jefferson, South Dakota, that was stopped at the red light facing northbound.
The Sentra then side swiped a red Chevy Malibu driven by Evan Wielenga of Hull, which was also stopped waiting for the red light facing northbound.
The Nissan continued northbound through the red light and struck a Gray 2015 GMC Yukon being driven by Jeremy Ahlers of Remsen. The Nissan then struck a 2008 GMC Sierra being driven by Pat Hoebelheinrich of Le Mars.
Ultimately, the Nissan then came to rest in the middle of the intersection. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was transported to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center by Hinton Ambulance and was pronounced dead at Mercy.
Jamie Ahlers, a passenger in the Yukon, was transported to Orange City Health Care by Merrill Ambulance and sustained minor injuries. The four children in the Yukon were treated on scene.
The Gold Nissan was reported stolen out of Sioux City earlier in the day prior to the accident. Following the accident, the Plymouth County sheriff’s Office indicated it would be working with the State Medical Examiner’s Office to help in identifying this individual.
On Monday, the driver of the gold Nissan Sentra who received fatal injuries was identified as Ryan S. Maier, 26, of Sioux City. Assisting with the identification of the subject was the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux City Police Department, and the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office.
The Plymouth County Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by Hinton Police Department, Hinton Fire Department, Merrill Fire Department, Plymouth County Conservation, Iowa DOT, and Iowa State Patrol.
