Police told KCRA 3 among the deceased was one pedestrian and one driver
Two people are dead following a traffic collision Sunday night in Citrus Heights, according to police.
Citrus Heights Police said the crash happened on Auburn Boulevard near Cobalt Way around 7:45 p.m. Police said a pedestrian was in the middle lane of Auburn Boulevard when the driver of a speeding vehicle hit the pedestrian. That driver swerved into the traffic lane, and then they hit a second vehicle head-on. The driver of the second car then crashed their vehicle into the brick barrier of a neighborhood facing Auburn Boulevard.
Authorities said the pedestrian died at the scene, and the two drivers were taken to the hospital. Police confirmed with KCRA 3 that the driver of the vehicle that was hit head-on died, while the driver who hit the pedestrian sustained “mild to moderate injuries.”
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police said they believe speed is a factor, but could not say Sunday night if alcohol or drugs also played a role in the collision.
As of 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Auburn Boulevard was shut down between Cobalt Way and San Tomas Drive while police continued their investigation. The identity of deceased pedestrian and deceased driver are not being released yet.
A KCRA crew is at the scene. We will continue to update this story.
