BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. (KBAK/KBFX) — UPDATE (NOV. 14, 6 A.M.):
A three-vehicle crash has left one person dead, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers said the crash happened on November 13, 2023, at around 3:18 p.m. on Wheeler Ridge Road, north of Herring Road.
CHP said a Ford truck was traveling northbound behind a Chevrolet when it crossed the painted double yellow lines dividing the northbound and southbound lanes.
As the Ford entered the southbound lane to pass the Chevrolet, the driver of the Ford failed to observe the 2015 Freightliner pulling two empty flatbed trailers in the southbound lane.
The driver of the Freightliner turned their vehicle to the right and slowed in an attempt to avoid the Ford truck, but the Ford crashed into the front of the Freightliner.
The Ford truck then traveled out of control and crashed into the left side of the Chevrolet.
The Chevrolet went off of the roadway and came to rest on the dirt shoulder.
The Freightliner came to rest blocking the southbound lane of Wheeler Ridge Road.
The Ford truck came to rest in the roadway and became fully engulfed. The driver was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Freightliner did not report any injuries. CHP said those inside the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital.
CHP said it is unknown whether the driver of the Ford was wearing a seatbelt.
It is unknown whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this crash for the driver of the Ford.
California Highway Patrol's website reports that at least one person is dead after a crash between a semi-trailer truck and one vehicle in the Arvin area Monday afternoon.
At around 3:18 p.m., CHP reported that on North Wheeler Ridge Road near Herring Road, a semi-trailer and a vehicle crashed. The vehicle and a rear axle of the semi-trailer caught on fire, according to the website.
The north and southbound lanes of North Wheeler Ridge Road are blocked.
A third vehicle was possibly involved.
The coroner was called about 20 minutes later.
An Eyewitness News crew is en route to the area.
