The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said officers with the Sacramento Police Department were following a stolen Tesla around 2 p.m. in the Arden area on Saturday and lost sight of it. The Tesla was identified in sheriff’s office jurisdiction and a pursuit began around 2:47 p.m. after units attempted to pull the car over. The driver evaded deputies, the sheriff’s office said.
According to the sheriff’s office, a helicopter soon spotted the Tesla, identifying it hit a minivan on Kiefer Boulevard. Two people inside the minivan were trapped and Sacramento Fire officials arrived at the scene to help get them out.
“This was a very difficult extrication because the Tesla is down an embankment and the minivan is on top of it. We have to stabilize the minivan before we can even attempt to get to that Tesla,” said Justin Sylvia, of Sacramento Fire. “They had to roll the dash to get the people out from under it because their legs were trapped.”
Sacramento Fire told KCRA 3 that both people in the van were women. One died and the other was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The sheriff’s office said that the driver of the stolen vehicle died.
The two people who died in the crash were identified as 42-year-old Mashea Jordan and 26-year-old Aphis Nash, according to the coroner’s office.
The Sacramento Police Department will be the lead agency investigating the crash.
