A youth football organization paid tribute Saturday to a 12-year-old boy who died, along with his grandfather, in a vehicle crash Friday night.
Zane Rupert, 12, and David Faulx, 65, died after the car Faulx was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle on Winfield Road in Winfield Township, according to state police.
“The Spartans, our coaches, and Zane’s teammates stand with the Rupert family and our hearts go out to them in their moment of pain,” said Dave Drane, the president of the Saxonburg Spartans Youth Football organization.
Zane, who wore number 95, played for the 12-and-under team. Drane described him as a hard worker and a great teammate.
“Everybody’s having a hard time right now,” Drane said.
The 12-and-under game was canceled Saturday, but Zane’s teammates showed up for the other games, as well as “Seniors’ Night,” which ended with a tribute to Zane.
Holding signs with Zane’s number 95, his parents and other family members walked out to midfield, where they received flowers from Zane’s teammates.
A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for Zane’s funeral expenses.
