1 dead, 1 injured following Wednesday accident on U.S. 31 – Petoskey News-Review

BAY HARBOR — One woman is dead following a car accident Wednesday afternoon on U.S. 31 in Emmet County.
The Petoskey Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the site of the accident at 2:14 p.m.
The accident was between a pickup truck and an Audi passenger car, said Lieutenant David Schultz.
Two women were in the Audi, and the driver was pronounced dead on scene by Emmet County Medical Examiner Carl Hawkins. The passenger was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital with injuries, though Schultz said he is unaware of her current status. The two women have homes in Northern Michigan, but do not live in the area all year, he said.
The pickup truck had one driver and no passengers, and they sustained no injuries. The pickup truck is owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources within its Fisheries and Wildlife Department, Schultz said.

The accident is still under investigation, and the Department of Public Safety is unable to share names at this time. The accident was captured by a witness on their dash cam and that footage is being reviewed by the department, Schultz said.
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the Department of Public Safety in the accident reconstruction.
Shortly after the accident, U.S. 31 was closed both northbound and southbound between Townsend Road and Lake Grove Road. A little after 5 p.m., the Michigan Department of Transportation reported that all lanes had re-opened.
